ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate the effect of packaging materials and storage temperatures on the microbiological quality of Hibiscus sabdarifa drinks produced with: 1) commercial pineapple flavour (HCPF) and; 2) Phoenix dactylifera (38%) and pineapple extract (2%) (HPPE). Methodology: Pasteurized drinks packaged in polyethylene sachets, plastic and glass bottles were stored at refrigeration (4.4±2oC) and ambient (25±2oC) temperatures for 27 and 9 days respectively. Results: There was significant (P≤0.05) decrease in total bacterial count in HCPF (≤4.51-≥2.14 Log10CFU/ml) with higher death rate (0.06) in plastic bottles at 4.4±2oC while at 25±2oC it increased significantly (P≤0.05) in HPPE samples (4.00-≤4.95 Log10CFU/ml) with least growth rate in plastic bottles (0.02). Yeast count at 25±2oC (1.28 – 2.15 Log10CFU/ml) was significantly (P≤0.05) higher than at 4.4±2oC (1.00 – 1.60 Log10CFU/ml) and drinks in plastic bottles had the least growth rates (≤0.03). Coliform (2.04 – 2.59 Log10CFU/ml), Escherichia coli (2.00 – 2.93 Log10CFU/ml) and Staphylococcus (2.00 – 2.50 Log10CFU/ml) sparingly detected, were unable to grow in the drinks with greater inhibition at 25±2oC in all packaging materials. No growth of Salmonella was observed in the drinks. Glass bottles favoured more microbial growth but the levels were satisfactory for all packaging which is indicative of microbiological safety. Conclusion: Any of the packaging material can be used for packaging of Hibiscus sabdarifa drinks with storage at refrigeration temperature for ≤ 21 days. It is informative to both consumers and producers that the then wasted pineapple peels can serve as an ingredient in Hibiscus sabdarifa drink production.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective To explore the molecular mechanism of neuropathologic damage induced by radiofrequency ablation at different temperatures. Methods This is basic research, and 36 SD rats were used to construct the neuropathological injury model. The rats were subjected to radiofrequency stimulation at different temperatures and were divided into 6 groups according to the temperature injury: 42°, 47°, 52°, 57°, 62°, and 67°C groups. Conduction time, conduction distance, and nerve conduction velocity were recorded after temperature injury. HE-staining was used to observe the histopathological morphology of the sciatic nerve. The expression of SCN9A, SCN3B, and NFASC protein in sciatic nerve tissue were detected by western blot. Results With the increase in temperature, nerve conduction velocity gradually decreased, and neurons were damaged when the temperature was 67°C. HE-staining showed that the degrees of degeneration of neurons in rats at 47°, 52°, 57°, 62°, and 67°C were gradually increased. The expression of SCN9A, SCN3B protein in 57°, 62°, 67°C groups were much higher than that of NC, 42°, 47°, 52°C groups. However, the expression of NFASC protein in 57°, 62°, 67°C groups was much lower than that of the NC, 42°, 47°, 52°C groups. Conclusion There was a positive correlation between temperature caused by the radiofrequency stimulation to neuropathological damage. The mechanism is closely related to the expression of SCN9A, SCN3B, and NFASC protein in nerve tissue caused by heat transfer injury.

ABSTRACT

Objectives To analyze the features on temperature and mortality of Changsha in 2009-2019, and to explore the association between temperatures variation between neighboring days (TVN) and mortality by using time-series analysis. Methods A Poisson generalized linear regression model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to analyse the association between TVN and mortality. Results A total of 404 328 deaths were studied in Changsha during 2010-2019,the proportion of people aged over 65 years, males respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease were 74.1761%, 58.9842%, 11.11% and 54.4671%, respectively. During the 3652-day study period, the daily mean maximum and minimum temperature were 35.8℃ -2.8℃. The TVN varied from -12.30℃ to 10.8℃,and a significant correlation was found between TVN and mortality risk, with 1.12% (RR=1.0112,95% CI:1.0061~1.0164) mortality risk increased for 1℃ rise in TVN, and the greatest effect of TVN on mortality was at 4 days lag. Based on age, gender and  group study For cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease,a 1℃ increased in TVN were associated with 2.97% and 1.52% death risk increase respectively. The effect appeared on the first day after exposure and lasted for 7 days, the maximum affection came on the fourth day. According to the analysis on age, gender and death-cause, the elderly man over 65 years old, respiratory disease people were more vulnerable to the temperature change between day by day. Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive picture of the non-linear associations between temperature variation and mortality, and there is a certain lag effect. The findings on vulnerability characteristics can help improve clinical and public health practices to reduce disease burden associated with current and future abnormal weather.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Potatoes for industrial processing must have high dry matter, low sugar and free from damage or disease. The objective was to determine the ideal temperature and storage period of commercial cultivars for frying. Tubers of Asterix and Cronos cultivars were stored in a cold chamber (Gallant CMC4 Premium) inside plastic boxes at 6 and 8 °C with 85 to 95% humidity for 180 days. Accumulated mass loss (PMA), alcohol insoluble solids (SIA), total soluble sugars (AST), non-reducing sugars (ANR), reducing sugars (AR), polyphenoloxidase activity (PPO) and enzymatic and non-enzymatic browning were analyzed. The PMA of Asterix at 6 and 8 ºC and Cronos at 6 °C was higher. The SIA of both cultivars stored at 6 ºC were lower and AST, AR and ANR higher. Those parameters of Cronos and Asterix did not differ between temperature or storage period. The browning was greater in the fried sticks of Asterix and Cronos stored at 6 ºC (4 to 5) for 60 and 90 days and at 8 °C (2 to 3) for 180 days, respectively. The ideal temperature and storage period for Asterix and Cronos cultivars is 8 ºC for a maximum of 120 days due to non-enzymatic browning.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the variability and trend of rainfall and extreme temperatures over three eastern and northeastern regions of Burundi during the period 1980-2015. Data used were collected from seven stations belonging to the geographical institute of Burundi. Annual and seasonal variability are assessed using standardized anomaly, coefficient of variance and precipitation concentration index. In addition, non parametric statistic tests Mann Kendall and Sen’s slope estimator are used to detect trends in rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures. The results reveal a high monthly and inter-annual variability of rainfall whereas the temperature does not show high fluctuation at monthly scale. The northern region presents the lowest amount of rainfall for the first rainfall season (October-January) when drought is frequently observed. No significant rainfall trend detected over all regions at seasonal and annual scales whereas significant increasing trend was observed for both maximum and minimum temperatures over all regions. The spatial distribution of rainfall and extreme temperatures displays also a wide variation across the region depending on topography of the study area.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of bladder infusion of sodium hyaluronate (HA) in the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC) at different temperatures. METHODS: Forty patients with IC admitted in our hospital from March 2018 to April 2019 were simply randomized and divided into two groups for prospective study, with 20 patients in each group. The temperature of perfusion fluid in normal temperature group was 37 ℃, and the temperature of perfusion fluid in high temperature group was 43 ℃. Compared the two groups before treatment, one month after treatment, and three months after treatment of interstitial cystitis problem score (ICPI), interstitial bladder symptoms score (ICSI), pre-veeing pain visual analogue score (VAS), and anxiety self-assessment scale (SAS), depression self-assessment scale (SDS), quality of life score (QOL), daily urination times, maximum bladder volume, bladder mast cell count, and immune factors [interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10] expression. RESULTS:The ICPI, ICSI, VAS, SAS, and SDS scores of the hyperthermia group were lower than those of the normal temperature group after one month and three months of treatment, and the QOL scores were higher than those of the normal temperature group after three months of treatment (P0.05). CONCLUSION:Compared with 37 ℃, intravesical instillation of HA in the treatment of IC can effectively relieve the clinical symptoms and signs of patients when the perfusion fluid is at a temperature of 43 ℃, and it improves the maximum bladder capacity and anxiety and depression, improves the quality of life of patients, which is safe and reliable. The mechanism may be related to the regulation of large cell, IL-6, IL-10 of bladder mucosa.

ABSTRACT

Intermittent exercise performance in a hot environment is lower than in temperate conditions. Cooling strategies at rest are important; however, the appropriate cooling temperature is not clear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature for cooling leg during half-time (HT) on intermittent exercise performance. Eleven men performed two pre-tests and three experimental trials of a 2 × 30 min intermittent exercise protocol in the heat (33°C; 50% relative humidity). During HT, three experimental conditions were set: no cooling (CON), cooling at the thigh using 12°C ice packs (COOL), and cooling at the thigh using 0°C ice packs (ICE) for 15 min. During the 2nd half, which consisted of 5 s maximal power pedaling every minute separated by 50 s of unloaded pedaling (80 rpm) and rest (5 s), the subjects repeated 2 × 15 sets of the intermittent exercise protocol. The peak power output under the COOL condition (694 ± 80 W) was significantly higher than that of the CON (653 ± 84 W). Thigh skin and deep temperatures showed a significant difference between each condition. In the COOL, thermal sensation was significantly lower, and thermal comfort was significantly higher. In a protocol that simulates intermittent athletic competitions such as soccer in a hot environment, using ice packs at 12°C to cool the thigh during HT lowered thigh skin and deep temperatures and improved heat perception and intermittent exercise performance. This cooling strategy is practical, suggesting that it would be effective for actual competitive situations.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The organoleptic evaluation and proximate analysis of Clarias gariepinus and Cyprinus carpio were determined in fresh fish and when refrigerated at two different temperatures (-21 °C and 4 °C) for a period of six weeks. A panel of twelve trained judges evaluated the color (live), texture, softness and flavor of fish meat after two minutes' steam cooking. Average score revealed a general decline in organoleptic properties such as color, texture, freshness, and taste of C. gariepinus and C. carpio stored at two temperatures compared to the fresh fish. Proximate analysis revealed a more decrease in crude protein and lipid contents and increase in ash content in C. gariepinus and C. carpio at the two storage temperatures compared to the fresh fish muscle. Moisture content decreased in the fish muscle samples of both the fish species stored at -21 °C but increased in the 4 °C stored samples. pH of fish was found to increase in the two stored temperatures. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in the organoleptic and proximate composition of the ice stored and fresh C. gariepinus and C. carpio, the same temperature and between the two different temperatures. The quality of fish muscle stored at 4 °C deteriorated faster than that of the -21 °C. Thus, storage temperature and duration have adverse effects on the nutritional quality of fish meat.

ABSTRACT

Aims: An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of a wide range of temperatures on the growth and physiology of Theobroma cacao, to study the differences between night and day temperatures and to determine the optimum temperature for the cocoa growth. Study Design: The experiment used five combinations of night and day temperatures (18°C and 30°C [18N30N], 18°C and 36°C; [18N 36D], 24°C and 24°C [24N24D], 24°C and 30°C [24N30D] and 24°C and 36°C [24N36D]) using complete randomized design (CRD). Place and Duration of Study: Crops and Environment Laboratory University of Reading and International Cocoa Quarantine Centre, between 23rd May 2016 and 25th July 2016. Methodology: The cocoa seedlings were put into five growth cabinets with five different night and day temperatures combinations (18°C and 30°C, 18°C and 36°C, 24°C and 24°C, 24°C and 30°C, 24°C and 36°C) for two months (63 days) under controlled environment condition where the relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit were controlled. Destructive harvest data was taken at end of the experiment which included fresh weight, dry weight, leaf area and root weight. Non-destructive measurements were height of the plant, photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll fluorescence and total chlorophyll content. Results: Treatment 24N30D have the best growth and treatment 24N36D had the lowest growth performances compared to other treatments. Conclusion: The growth was not only dependent on the day temperature, but also on the night temperature. A large gap between night and day temperatures (DIF) reduced the cocoa growth. The result also showed the optimum temperature amongst those studied for cocoa growth is the combination of 24°C night temperature and 30°C day temperature.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi make up an important ecological niche in ecosystems, and knowledge of their diversity in extreme environments is still incipient. The objective of this work was to evaluate the density and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the soil of King George Island in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, Antarctica. For that, soil and roots of Deschampsia antarctica were collected at the brazilian research station in Antarctica. The spore density, species diversity and mycorrhizal colonization in the roots were evaluated. There was a low density of spores (27.4 ± 17.7) and root mycorrhizal colonization (6 ± 5.1%), which did not present statistical difference. Four species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were identified, distributed in two genera: three species of the genus Glomus (Glomus sp1, Glomus sp2 and Glomus sp3) and one of the genus Acaulospora, which was identified at species level (Acaulospora mellea). Greater soil diversity was verified with pH 5.9 and phosphorus concentration of 111 mg dm-3, occurring two species of genus Glomus and A. mellea. Based on literature data, this may be the first record of this species of Acaulospora mellea in Antarctic soils, colonizing D. antarctica plants.

ABSTRACT

To observe the effects of Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma processed by different methods (sulfur-fumigation, different temperatures baking and microwave sterilization) on salivary amylase and D-xylose excretion rate in spleen deficiency rats. The rats were divided into blank control group, rhubarb-induced spleen deficiency model control group, and Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma experimental groups processed with different methods. Amylase colorimetric method was used to determine the activities of salivary amylase and D-xylose excretion rate was measured with O-benzylamine method. Then the correlation of salivary amylase activity and D-xylose excretion rate in urinary was analyzed. As compared with blank control group, Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma baked at 100,110 ℃ can increase the unit content of rat salivary amylase and D-xylose excretion rate, with a significant difference (P<0.05). As compared with the model group, Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma baked at 70 ℃ and Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma with microwave treatment had stronger effects than the others, with statistically significant differences (P<0.01). Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma could improve D-xylose absorption function and salivary amylase activity in spleen deficiency rats. In addition, D-xylose excretion rate in urine was positively correlated with salivary amylase activity. Atractylodis Macrocephale Rhizoma processed with different temperatures baking and microwave sterilization had little impact on salivary amylase activity and D-xylose excretion rate in urine of spleen deficiency rats, while sulfur fumigation had great effects on the above two indexes.

ABSTRACT

The infrared thermography is a diagnostic imaging tool, which measures the surface temperature of an object through its heat emission. It is a non-invasive method, painless, with no involvement of radiation. Horses have elevated incidence of back injuries which causes decrease in their performance. A rapid and accurate diagnostic is essential to start the treatment. The aim of this paper was to establish the ideal time to the animal stay e inside a controlled room to balance their temperature and in the second time verify the thermographic temperature of specific back regions. It was studied fifteen healthy horses, being performed thermography of thoracic, lumbar and pelvic regions in four different times. There was a significant difference between the thermography performed outside and inside of the controlled temperature room. It was concluded that the ideal time to the horse stay into the controlled temperature room was thirty minutes and the mean thermographic temperatures of back regions, were obtained and can be used as parameters to identify injuries in other horses.

ABSTRACT

Due to high temperatures, practically all coffee farms in the state of Rondonia are of the C. canephora species. Thus, importing arabica coffee from other states becomes necessary for composition of blends, as well as for the specialty or gourmet coffee market. The purpose of this study was to select arabica coffee genotypes that exhibit satisfactory agronomic performance under high temperature conditions. The experiment was conducted in OuroPreto do Oeste, RO, Brazil, with mean annual temperature of 25.8°C and mean annual rainfall of 2300mm year-1. The experiment was composed of 114 arabica coffee genotypes, with 103 progenies and eleven control cultivars, provided by EPAMIG. A randomized block experimental design was used with three replications, spacing of 3.0x1.0 meters and five plants per plot. All the crop seasons showed significant difference for the green coffee yield trait. In joint analysis, significant differences were detected among progenies and control cultivars. In the average of the four harvests, green coffee yield was 32.38 bags ha-1. The cultivars 'CatuaíVermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' and 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' stood out, achieving yields greater than 40 bags ha-1. The gain obtained from selection was 14.33 bags ha-1, which is equivalent to an increase of 44.04% in production of green coffee. The progeny H514-7-10-6-2-3-9 stood out with an average yield of 51.20 bags ha-1. In regard to maturation cycle, 56% of the progenies were classified as early maturity and 44% as medium maturity. Late maturity genotypes were not observed.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The implementation of animal models for the study of periodontal and dental tissues of teeth articulated into their sockets and subjected to high temperatures allows the establishment of repetitive parameters which might contribute to identification processes. Aim: To describe radiographic changes of pig's (Sus domesticus) periodontal and dental tissues subjected to high temperatures. Material and methods: An in vitro pseudo-experimental, descriptive and observational study was undertaken in order to assess radiological changes of periodontal and dental tissues of 60 domestic pig's teeth which had been subjected to high temperatures (200, 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 ºC). Results: The dental and periodontal tissues subject of this research article presented strong resistance to high temperatures without considerable variation of their micro-structure. Thus, physical changes (dimensional stability, fissures, cracks and fractures) which took place as temperature increased, could be described using a conventional X-ray. Conclusions: Radiographic examination of teeth articulated in their sockets can be established as a mechanism to determine the temperature at which the tooth was subjected. This could be used in processes of dental identification and medical-legal autopsy documentation in cases of burned, carbonized or incinerated human remains. Domestic pigs (Sus domesticus) can be regarded as a suitable experimental animal models to study the aforementioned changes. Nevertheless, a study involving human teeth articulated in their own socket is recommended in order to determine whether the radiographic findings herein described are replicated and can be extrapolated.

ABSTRACT

IIntroduction: during the process of forensic identification of corpses and burnt, carbonized, or incinerated human remains, the analysis of materials used in dental treatments is a reliable marker for accurate identification. The objective of this study was to describe the radiographic changes of titanium and fiberglass posts cemented in human premolars subjected to high temperatures for forensic purposes. Methods: this was a pseudo-experimental in vitro study to observe the radiographic changes of dental tissues (enamel, dentin, and cement) and the following endodontic materials: gutta-percha (Wave One® by Dentsply Maillefer®), obturation material (Top Seal® by Dentsply Maillefer®), post cementation material (Relyx TM ARC by 3M ESPE®), titanium posts (Tenax® Endodontic Post System by Coltene®), and fiberglass posts (Tenax® Fiber Trans by Coltene®) in 30 human teeth subject to five temperature ranges: 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000° C. Results: the studied dental tissues and materials are highly resistant to high temperatures without significantly changing their macrostructure (fissures, cracks, fractures, and fragmentation), in such a way that the physical changes can be identified through conventional radiography and associated with each specific temperature range. Conclusions: posts cemented in human premolars have great resistance to the action of high temperatures, so they can be observed through conventional radiography thus contributing to the process of identification and documentation of the medico-legal autopsy of a corpse or human remains that have been burned, incinerated, or carbonized

ABSTRACT

New northwestern records of the striped treefrog Hypsiboas caingua (Carrizo, 1991 “1990”) are presented for Brazil, extending its known geographic distribution approximately 115 km northward (linear distance) of the previous northernmost record of the species. In all new localities, individuals of H. caingua were only found in calling activity under temperatures below 18°C. The species appears to be associated with Atlantic Forest, although it had already been recorded in Cerrado. Although the scientific literature data suggests that H. caingua presents discontinuous geographical distribution, three methods of distribution modelling based on climatic data show that the species' distribution is continuous. The gap in the distribution may be related to the lack of field surveys in the regions that connect these populations, especially in colder periods. Nevertheless, factors other than climate might also be responsible for the current distribution of H. caingua, since the species was absent in well-surveyed sites situated between the areas of modeled distribution. Therefore, further studies on natural history, populations' genetic structure, and geographic distribution models implementing factors other than climate will be important to elucidate some ecological and evolutionary aspects of the distribution of H. caingua in South America.

ABSTRACT

The Magdalena River Turtle, Podocnemis lewyana, is an endangered and endemic turtle from Colombia. Among the most important information needed to conserve endangered species is to identify, monitor, and protect the sites used by the species to reproduce and grow. In this study we report, for the first time, the reproductive output and the nesting beaches of P. lewyana in the Claro Cocorná Sur River, a tributary of the Magdalena River drainage. We systematically examined a river transect of 8 km with 14 sandy beaches during two nesting seasons in one year. We recorded a yearly production of 47 clutches, 957 eggs, and two preferred nesting beaches: Alto Bonito with 51 %, and Bélgica with 28.3 % of this reproductive output. AAFUVER, a community-based organization, has led a headstarting program since 2010 to decrease in-situ egg mortality due to predation on nesting beaches. AAFUVER collects and incubates the eggs ex-situ, raises the hatchlings for one to five months and then releases them into the same river. To understand potential effects of such egg manipulation, we monitored and compared in-situ and ex-situ incubation temperatures. We found ex-situ temperatures below the pivotal temperature known for P. lewyana and below the temperatures in nesting beaches. Finally, we monitored hatchlings growth under AAFUVER captive conditions, and found that hatchlings duplicated their body mass during the first three months of age. Egg weight was strongly associated to body weight at hatching, however this association is lost by the third month of age. We strongly encourage supporting this community-based conservation program, and the protection of the Claro Cocorná Sur River as an important nesting and growth habitat for the conservation of P. lewyana.
